Extracting files from a compressed folder in Windows 7

Other Windows 7 tutorials

I. Why?

Before modifying files from a compressed folder or opening them in certain programs, you need to extract them from the compressed folder.

II. How?

  1. In the Computer or the Documents library in Windows, locate the compressed folder that contains the files to be extracted, and double-click on it. (See note 1)

  1. In the toolbar at the top of the window, click the Extract all files button.

  1. The Extraction Wizard appears to guide you through the extraction process.

  1. A text field at the top of the dialogue box identifies the destination directory for the extracted files. By default, the assistant will create a sub-directory in the current directory with the same name as the compressed folder. (For example, if you have downloaded the compressed folder to the Z: drive, the destination sub-directory is displayed like this: Z:\Name of new sub-directory=Name of compressed folder.)
The extracted files will be stored in this new sub-directory. This allows you to keep the files together, but separate from the other files in the directory.

  1. To modify the destination directory:
    1. Click the Browse button. Choose the directory in which you wish to save the files, OR
    2. Modify the destination in the text field in the Wizard and type the name of your choice for the new sub-directory (like this: Z:\Name of your choice), OR
    3. Delete the proposed name of the sub-directory as well as the \ character before it, to save the files in the current directory.

  1. By default, the assistant will display the list of extracted files in a new window. If you do not want to see the list, uncheck the Show extracted files checkbox.

  1. Click the Extract button.

  1. The files can now be modified or used with other programs. (See note 2)

Notes

  1. If you are accessing this tutorial through the Linguistech Tool Box, clicking on the file you want to download will open a window asking you what you would like to do with the compressed (zipped) folder. Be sure that Open with is selected, and click OK. A new window will open, displaying the files contained within the compressed folder you have downloaded. These files are still compressed.
  2. You will notice that the files still appear within the compressed folder. The extraction process creates a copy of the files outside of the compressed folder. Remember that if you update these files and you would like to include the updated file in the compressed folder, it is up to you to copy it there.
